What's this test for?
By combining a Free-T4 with a TSH a more accurate picture of the state of a persons Thyroid can be measured. If the Pituitary gland detects a drop in the level of Thyroid hormones in the blood it increases the production of Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH). In a normal person, this causes the Thyroid gland to produce more T4.
If the Thyroid gland is under active (Hypothyroidism) this increase in TSH will have little so the Free T4 will remain low and the TSH will climb higher. Conversely, if the Thyroid gland is overactive (Hyperthyroidism) then the Pituitary will stop producing TSH and the Free-T4 will be high.
ApoE genotyping is sometimes used as part of follow-up testing if high cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations are found, to check if a particular lipid abnormality has been genetically inherited. It is not widely used, but when it is requested, it may be in combination with other tests, such as lipoprotein electrophoresis.
