Testosterone Health Test

What's this test for?

Testosterone is a steroid hormone made by the testes in males. The production of testosterone is stimulated and controlled by luteinising hormone (LH), which is manufactured in the pituitary gland. In men, testosterone stimulates the enlargement, growth of body hair, muscle development, and a deepening voice.

It is present in large amounts in boys during puberty and in men to regulate the sex drive and maintain muscle mass. In women, testosterone levels are about one tenth of those in men. Testosterone is produced both in small amounts from the ovary and by conversion from other weak androgens in the body. This test measures the total testosterone in the blood, it is usually done in conjunction with an SHBG, which carries inactive testosterone, to calculate a free androgen index that shows the amount of active testosterone in the blood.

Results

Results are normally available in 1-2 working days after receipt of the sample at our lab. You will receive an email and SMS once your test results are ready to be downloaded from your secure account area, where you can also simply track and manage all your health test results at any time.

All results come with a clear indication and details on your levels. Information is provided showing what a normal range is for the test and whether your results are Low, Ok or too High. We can also provide a doctors comment which will help confirm what your results state as well as summarising your results.

What will this test kit find out?

We can test for a range of different allergies and health markers, using one of our home-testing kits. In this kit, you'll be able to test:

Testosterone

Testosterone is a male hormone which is produced in the testicles of men and, in much smaller amounts, in the ovaries of women. It is responsible for bone and muscle strength, as well as mood, energy and sexual function.

Testosterone levels decline with age and it is unusual to find naturally elevated levels in men. Low testosterone is more common than raised testosterone in the absence of supplementation.

In women, raised testosterone can result in male characteristics such as body hair, greater bulk, a deeper voice and acne - all symptoms of polycystic ovaries, a condition in which elevated testosterone is commonly seen.
